Opening a Bank Account in Colombia as a Foreigner
Opening a bank account in Colombia is not immediate and depends heavily on your legal status.
Most banks require a valid visa, not just a tourist entry. Without it, options are limited to international accounts or cash-based transactions.
Even with a visa, requirements may include:
- Local address
- Colombian phone number
- Proof of income or activity
Processing times vary, and account activation is not always same-day.
Another issue is international transfers. Direct transfers from UK, EU, or US banks can trigger compliance checks, delays, or additional documentation requests. This is particularly common for larger amounts.
Currency exchange is also relevant. Exchange rates offered by banks are often less competitive than specialised services. Many expats initially rely on platforms such as Wise before fully transitioning to local banking.
Cash usage remains common in Colombia, especially outside major cities. Not having immediate access to a local account can complicate daily transactions, rent payments, and service setup.
A frequent mistake is assuming the process will be similar to the UK or EU, where accounts can be opened quickly and remotely.
Preparation and timing are important to avoid access issues during the first weeks after arrival.
